ENDANGERED SPECIES

WHOOPING CRANE (Federally Endangered)

Best Time: November - March

The Whooping Crane is a tall, elegant bird that's about 5 feet tall with mostly white feathers and black wingtips, making them the tallest birds in North America. In 1941, only 15 birds survived, and they all lived on the central Texas coast. Today, the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge hosts the world's only natural migrating flock during winter months. These majestic birds are a bucket-list species for birders worldwide.

Where to See: Aransas National Wildlife Refuge (boat tours highly recommended from Rockport Harbor) Identification: White body with black wing tips, red crown, nearly 8-foot wingspan, loud bugling call

SPOTLIGHT SPECIES

ROSEATE SPOONBILL

Best Time: Year-Round (Peak Spring-Summer)

During breeding season, hundreds of Roseate Spoonbills nest around Little Bay and coastal islands. Their brilliant pink plumage and distinctive spoon-shaped bill make them one of the most photographed birds in the area. Watch them feeding in shallow waters, sweeping their unique bills side to side.

Where to See: Rockport Beach Park, Little Bay, Aransas Woods, coastal marshes Identification: Bright pink body, bare greenish head, flat spoon-shaped bill

REDDISH EGRET

Best Time: Year-Round

An entertaining bird to watch! Reddish Egrets perform a distinctive "dancing" feeding behavior, running and hopping through shallow water with wings spread. They're less common than other herons, making sightings special.

Where to See: Rockport Beach, shallow bay flats, tidal areas Identification: Shaggy reddish head and neck, bluish-gray body, pink bill with black tip
